The Triangle
Ian Brown
Here at Sons and Daughters, we often use shapes to help us visualize concepts that we learn from scripture, other writers, or from one of our teachers or students. One of the shapes we use is the triangle. The triangle shape is based on the story and concept told in Luke chapter 6, verses 12 through 19. I encourage you to read this portion, but I will still summarize it. In this portion of scripture, we see Jesus going up to a mountain and praying to God all night long. Jesus then brings all of His disciples together and calls twelve of them to be His apostles. Jesus then went down the mountain with His disciples and stood on a large and level area. People came to Jesus so they could hear His teachings and be healed by Him.
Now, I see three main points to this story.
1. Jesus went and prayed to God for a long time
2. Jesus brought His community around him
3. Jesus healed people who were afflicted by impure spirits
This order of events is one that you can follow in your own life. You can pray to God, bring your community around you, and go out into the world and share the goods news of Jesus Christ. However, this whole idea and concept can be summed up in three words: Up, In and Out. Now, you might be thinking... How does this involve a triangle?
The triangle shape helps to view these three core steps in a cohesive manner. In order to go Out, you have to go In and to go In, you have to go Up. We need to go Up to God in prayer, In to our communities, and Out into the world and other communities.
